Schlitterbahn Kansas City Waterpark Update
It's a beautiful 82-degree day in Kansas City and a great time for a project update! We are so excited to introduce a long list of great new rides and a park that is double in size for the 2012 season. Here are a few images of activity inside the park as we put the finishing touches on a major expansion that has been a year in the making.
Below is Boogie Bahn, Kansas City's only surf ride. A rapidly moving sheet of water will rush out of the gates just below the fence in the picture. The water streams across the wave-shaped surface as surfers maneuver on the surface of the wave that is created. Thousands of gallons of water flow across the padded surface with a water depth is just a couple of inches. Beneath the sheet of water is the light blue foam covered surface you can see here. The darker blue area is actually a giant grate through which the water drops after it leaves the foam surface.
Below is a behind the scenes look at the tank through which the water for Boogie Bahn is channeled. The openings along the lower right side of the image lead to the gates that open to the ride surface.
Next is the giant Archimedes screw that pumps water to the 3,000-foot King Kaw Rapids River. If you have been to the park, you have seen a similar screw pump at Torrent River. This screw is much bigger. It elevates water along side a 155-foot Aqua Veyer which lifts guests in tubes to the top.
Finally, here is a peek at the new Tornado Alley slide tower. Some of our guests were treated to a sneak peek of two of the three slides at the end of last season. Twister and Cyclone are two head-first mat slides, and Whirlwind is a totally enclosed dark tube slide. Our other slide tower at the park is 42 feet in height. On Tornado Alley, guests experience a change in elevation of more than 60 feet from platform to splash down.

Private cabana rentals allow you to secure a private, tropical spot in the park on the day of your visit. (Plus, they come with great amenities!)

Schlitterbahn Announces New Year-Round Indoor Waterpark Hotel Located on South Padre Island, Texas!

We are so excited to announce the new beachfront resort which includes lodging, retail, restaurants, year-round indoor waterpark and special access to the summertime
Schlitterbahn Beach outdoor waterpark.
Schlitterbahn, respected worldwide for ground-breaking water-based entertainment destinations, announces plans for a new 221 room, year-round entertainment resort destination -- Schlitterbahn Beach Resort, South Padre Island, Texas.
Located on the pristine beaches of the Gulf of Mexico at the former location of the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort, this exciting new beachfront resort destination includes lodging, retail, restaurants, a year-round indoor / outdoor convertible Waterpark, new slides and rides and special access to the award-winning Schlitterbahn Beach outdoor Waterpark. The first phase of this project is scheduled to open summer of 2012.
Not only will hotel guests enjoy the new spacious upscale accommodations, but resort guests will also receive a variety of VIP amenities including unlimited use of the Waterpark for the duration of their stay, extended use of select park rides and attractions, beach access amenities, Wi-Fi and free onsite parking.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to develop our new upscale waterpark hotel concept right here on South Padre Island,” explained Jeff Henry, principal for the Schlitterbahn Development Group. “Our team has been working on the creation and design of this world-class destination for more than two years and we are excited to be announcing this project today. Without the support and financial commitment of our partner, American National Insurance Company, and the local government, the realization of this dream could not have become a reality.”
Additional resort and attraction information, including new Waterpark technology, will be announced as the project’s development continues.
As part of Schlitterbahn’s ongoing commitment to the environment, this new resort includes the latest in energy and water saving technologies including compact fluorescent lights, LED technologies, low-flow fixtures and the constant capturing, filtering, sanitizing and recirculation of water through the new resort’s rides and attractions.
